For some reason, nobody wanted to dye their hair different colors and then wash it with four different shampoos, so I bought some blonde human hair from Amazon (and tried not to feel like a serial killer).

These blonde test swatches were colored with a 1:1 mix of AGEbeautiful Gentle 30 Volume Creme Developer and Ion Permanent Brights Creme Hair Color in Radiant Orchid or Ion Permanent Liquid Hair Color Medium Intense Brown.

For each shampoo we dyed six blonde hairs: three dyed purple and three dark brown.

Then I dyed six swatches of hair for each shampoo – three purple and three brown. I let them sit for 30 minutes, then rinse the dye with cold water, air and towel dry.

As for the shampoo, I combined 1/3 teaspoon of each shampoo with 1/3 cup of water in a glass and mixed well. Each shampoo received two glasses, one for each dye color.

Then came counting time: I flipped two of the three swatches dyed the same color into each glass for five seconds, leaving one unshampooed swatch as a control. Afterwards, I rinsed the shampooed samples in cold water (watching out for more dye runoff), squeezed out the excess water, and then let them dry overnight.

For the purple dye cream, Dove and Nexus removed minimal dyes from the dyes. You can tell because the color in the glasses is brighter and more vibrant with Olaplex and Pantene.

For liquid brown dyes, Olaplex and Dove removed the least amount of dye from the dyes. You can tell because the colored water in the glass is darker than with Nexxus and Pantene.

To my eye, there was no color difference between the control hair and the washed hair, although I noticed the dye running after the first shampoo session. However, it was a different story after I washed each color hair swatch, which I had already shampooed an additional four times.

All shampoos resulted in some fading after five washes, with purple hair washed with Nexxus showing the least fading.

The results were similar with brown hair. The swatches shampooed five times with Dove, Olaplex and Pantene all showed similar fading, with significantly more fading than the Nexxus swatches.

Based on this trial, Nexxus Color Assure shampoo seems to be the best shampoo for colored hair. Hair dipped in Nexxus shampoo experienced fading in less than five washes. Although Nexxus’s initial results for blonde hair dye were not very promising, there was noticeable shedding after the first wash, and it easily outperformed other shampoos for minimizing fading after multiple washes.

Even better, Nexxus worked equally well with both purple dye and brown dye, meaning you can get a bright or dark dye job (or both at the same time), and it will help your hair stay the color you dyed it. It’s for a long time.
