Brainwave entrainment is a technology that uses sound frequencies to change a person’s brainwave activity and induce a different state of consciousness. In 2022, Silvermouse introduced brainwaves in the context of live music to the world by incorporating altered consciousness signals into our live performances.
Brain waves occur through a phenomenon known as frequency response (FFR). FFR occurs in the brain when a person hears an audio signal with a specific beat frequency, and this causes the listener’s brain waves to synchronize and enter those frequencies. This phenomenon, called brain wave entrainment or neuro-synchronization, has been used as a form of deep meditation, relaxation, healing, and spiritual exploration since humans discovered that drumming can induce a trance state.
Technically, any rhythm in music can create an attractive effect. A typical musical time signature is 120 beats per minute (BPM). If the music has only one beat at 120 BPM, it will create an FFR of 2Hz in the brain. 2Hz is a very low frequency of brain wave entry in the Delta range – the area of deep sleep. Since the brain can function anywhere between 0 and about 160Hz, bands often use different beat frequencies far outside the range of common music, with the potential to go up to about 9,600 BPM.
The magic of brainwave entrainment lies in the use of calibrated sound frequencies to target specific brainwaves. Each frequency synchronizes directly with the brain and induces a changed state of consciousness. Different frequencies cause different brain responses corresponding to different states of consciousness – from deep relaxation and meditation to increased activity and intense creativity. Silvermouse uses brainwave input technology to create immersive experiences for our audience members. For example, during a performance, we might use alpha brain waves to induce feelings of relaxation and peace and then combine them with gamma brain waves to create a more energetic and happy feeling. We also incorporate brainwaves into our live performances to create a powerful emotional connection between the audience and the music.
On top of this, we enjoy looking at the relationship between the natural world and the frequencies we use and demonstrate how to condition our brains to resonate with the Schumann Resonance and the cycle frequencies of the Moon.
Silvermouse is exploring other applications of brainwave stimulation in live music, such as using it to induce trance-like states or even vivid dream experiences in live performance settings. We are excited to explore the use of visual and lighting effects to enhance the experience and the possibility of combining brainwave access with other healing methods, such as distance energy work and intentional breath work. Signals combined with the right experience and intention can create a powerful and healing experience for the audience.
You may have heard of binaural beats, today’s most common form of entrainment. Binaural beats are a type of brainwave entrainment technology that you can use to alter states of consciousness. While they offer many benefits and are widely used in meditation, we cannot use them in live music because headphones are required to experience them fully. Binaural beats rely on playing different frequencies in each ear simultaneously to create brain wave effects. Complete stereo separation (headphones) is essential for hearing and experiencing these brain waves properly.

For our signal technology, Silvermouse is working with the Monroe Institute, where Justin is the Director of Audio Engineering, researching the relationship between sound and consciousness. Monroe Sound Science is a broad term covering any sound technology issued by the Monroe Institute. While they include binaural beats in many projects on their website, they also work with technology that does not require stereo separation and therefore, can be used in live performances. These technologies include isochronic tones, monaural beats, and a variety of proprietary Monroe Institute beat technologies that are effective in non-stereo settings.
Brainwave entrainment is not without its challenges. Technical difficulties, finding the perfect frequency for each performance, and measuring the audience’s experience with brainwave effects are some of the challenges the band faced when we started this project. Also, because brainwave input can affect different people, Silvermouse needs to be sensitive and aware of the possible reactions of our audience.
We started our research with a series of shows we called ‘Signal Test’, where we did a comprehensive survey after the show to gather feedback from our audience. Through those things, we gain confidence in what we are bringing to the public, giving us flexibility in our experiments.
One interesting challenge for the band, which we choose to see as a benefit, is that we certainly experience entrainment as well while we are playing for the audience. We have had times in the show where the effect of the signal was so strong that it took a concerted effort to continue playing, and when the time completely disappeared and neither of us knew how long we had been playing or where we were. !
Brain Hormesis And The Mind
However, being in tune with the audience and space is key to creating the shared experience we are trying to achieve. And, when we tune into the right signals, brainwaves are an excellent tool for unlocking creativity and focus while performing.
As a band, we spend a lot of time interacting with this technology to understand how to create the most powerful experience for our audience.
