In the past, buying a light bulb was a no-brainer. Now this is a headache; The transition to more energy-efficient lighting means choosing from a dazzling array of products.
A 60-watt incandescent bulb, for example, emits 800 lumens of light. And LED bulbs, which are more energy efficient than their incandescent counterparts, can provide the same amount of light using as little as 10 watts.
The Environmental Protection Agency says that if every household replaced a single incandescent light bulb with an Energy Star-rated LED or CFL (compact fluorescent), Americans would save nearly $700 million a year in energy costs.
But with so many types of bulbs with different prices and lifespans currently on the market, many consumers are confused.

Questions about light bulbs, we had an earful. So we tapped Noah Horowitz, director of the Natural Resources Defense Council’s Center for Energy Efficiency, to answer your most frequently asked questions.

Why do some CFLs die so quickly? This whole seven-year life thing seems random. I have some blisters that last for years but others that die within a year.
Why Choose Led Landscape Lighting?
Since not all CFLs are created equal, only purchase those with the Energy Star logo. These bulbs are not only efficient, but also meet the Environmental Protection Agency’s rigorous performance requirements and must pass various tests, including longevity. Frequently turning your CFL on and off can shorten its lifespan. Additionally, compact fluorescent lamps may not turn on or reach full brightness in very cold weather.
Everyone I’ve talked to says they just throw dead CFLs in the trash. Isn’t that a problem for landfills? Will we start hearing about dangerous levels of mercury in soil and water in a few years?
CFLs contain very low levels of mercury, now as low as 2 mg per bulb. Consumers should take advantage of free CFL recycling programs offered by major retailers such as Home Depot and Lowe’s. You should also know that although incandescent bulbs do not contain mercury, they cause much greater mercury emissions into the environment from coal-fired power plants because they use four times more energy than a CFL to produce the same amount of light. .
I have at least three lamps that use a three-way bulb (50/100/150), and I like having the option in terms of brightness. Is there a CFL or LED version of the three way bulb?

If you want to have different light levels and use an energy-saving bulb, you have two excellent choices. If you have a three-way socket, you can purchase a three-way CFL that will provide low, medium, and high light output, just like your old incandescent bulb did. If your fixture is dimmable, almost all LEDs are dimmable and you can enjoy even more flexibility.
The good news is that there is an energy-efficient CFL or LED for almost every outlet. These include candelabra or flame shaped bulbs, as well as round globe shaped bulbs that are often used in the bathroom vanity above the sink. Candelabra and globe compact fluorescent bulbs have been around for years, and LED models are also available online.
I have outlets that take nothing more than a 60 watt bulb. If I use an LED or CFL, can I use a brighter bulb? For example, a 13 watt CFL is equivalent to a 60 watt incandescent bulb. Is it ok to use a 23 watt CFL instead? This would give me the equivalent of a 100 watt incandescent.
Light fixtures have a safety rating and bulbs should not be installed that exceed the labeled rating (such as “do not exceed 60 watts”). As long as you don’t put a bulb that draws more than 60 watts in this socket, you’ll be fine.
Phase Out Of Incandescent Light Bulbs
The good news is that energy-saving bulbs that replace a 60-watt incandescent bulb will only use 10 to 15 watts, depending on the bulb you buy, and will emit the same amount of light. If you want even more light, you can upgrade to a 23 watt CFL which will put out as much light as the old 100 watt bulb, while staying below the 60 watt cutoff. However, you should not install a 100 watt bulb, as this could cause a fire hazard.
Are there any areas in the home where you would recommend CFLs over LEDs or vice versa, such as in outdoor lighting fixtures exposed to extreme temperatures? Or in indoor lamps?
CFLs do not work well in cold climates and may not even start. Therefore, they are not a good choice for porch lighting or other outdoor outlets in cold climates. We recommend consumers select LEDs for recessed boxes and downlights, as they are most effective for use as directional lighting and for sockets connected to a dimmer.
For bulbs that aren’t used very often and aren’t turned on and off frequently, CFLs are probably your best choice. Conversely, place LEDs in hard-to-reach sockets, as they last up to 25 years (with three hours of use per day), and you’ll avoid having to change the bulb for a very long time.

Are there any dangers in installing LEDs in enclosed fixtures or recessed boxes in my ceiling? Could they overheat?
The electronics inside the LED can fail if subjected to very high temperatures. LED reflector lights are specially designed to withstand the high temperature environments found inside recessed boxes, downlights or circles in your ceiling. If you install an LED in an enclosed fixture, it may shorten its lifespan. Look for those labeled as suitable for use in enclosed fixtures.
I don’t understand color temperature. “Daylight” made me feel like I was walking into a prison down my hallway to the bathroom. How can you determine, before purchasing, whether the light from the bulb is “good”, that is to say not too intense, sufficiently bright and sufficiently diffuse?
CFLs and LEDs come in different “flavors” of light. If you want to replicate the old yellowish-white light emitted by your incandescent, look for bulbs marketed as “soft white” or “warm white.” Conversely, if you prefer the light to be more of a bluish white color, select a lamp marketed as “daylight.”

Before you go out and turn off all the light bulbs in your house, we suggest you try one of each and see which one you like best. While CFLs, when introduced over 20 years ago, did not emit a pleasant light, today’s CFLs are much improved and in many cases you would be hard-pressed to notice the differences by compared to your old incandescent lamp. When it comes to LEDs, we find that people love everything, including the quality of light, except the purchase price which, fortunately, is falling every day.
Many LEDs simply do not turn off smoothly and simply turn off before reaching the desired low level. For what? Will the gradation improve?
Dimmable LEDs will work with most, but not all, installed dimmers. In some cases, you may need to replace your dimmer switch and install one specifically designed for LEDs and CFLs, which use four times less energy than older incandescent bulbs. In order to earn the Energy Star label, dimmable lamps must dim by up to 20% of the total light output without any noticeable buzzing or flickering. As LEDs are still relatively new products, we expect future dimmable LEDs to perform even better.
I like LEDs, but I feel like I’m being ripped off. Why are LEDs still so expensive, especially the brighter ones? When will the price drop?

The price of LEDs is falling rapidly. The LED bulb that replaces the old 60-watt incandescent bulb that cost $40 just a few years ago is now down to about $10 today.
