Fun Places To Go In Tokyo Japan – Tokyo is a popular destination for families because it’s easy to get around and has a lot to choose from for travelers of all ages. We have visited Japan as a family many times, and I have written travel tips. My Japan based on those trips. For a straightforward list of some of my favorite things to do in Tokyo with kids, I created this equally useful write-up.

Children love Tokyo because it is colorful and exotic. There are fun characters and robots everywhere as well as beautiful parks scattered around the city. It is clean and safe, the people are friendly, and you will not be bored.

It is impossible to do all that is available for tourists in Tokyo with children in one visit. I have compiled this list of recommendations over time and do not recommend trying to fit more each day. Tokyo can be a bit overwhelming for kids, so it’s a good idea to build some downtime into your itinerary.

I rarely start a list like this with shopping, but Tokyo is quite an exception because it’s one of the best things to do in Tokyo with kids, young or older.

It’s a way for them to experience pop culture, load up on Pokemon and Rilakkuma, explore crazy toys and robots, or even try Japanese sweets from the store’s food court.

I could devote an entire post to this topic alone between specialty retailers, shops, and shopping streets that we love.

Fun Things To Do In Tokyo (+ Where To Eat & Stay!)

Dating back to the 1950s, Kiddy Land has stocked everything from Sanrio gear, including Hello Kitty, to vintage puzzles on five floors of top-notch displays.

This is a fun place to let the kids buy their own souvenirs, although keep in mind that it can be hectic and may be too much for kids to handle. It is located in Omotesando.

If your child is into crafts, paper, stickers, stamps, pens, and other neat crafts, go to Itoya, Japan’s oldest stationery store and one of my favorite stores in the world and even my daughter has loved it since she was little. Little girl.

Walk south along the same street from Itoya to enter the multi-story Hakuhinkan Toy Park where you’ll be able to pick up random souvenirs and toys you can’t find at home (my daughter picked up a Justin Bieber mask which was a huge hit. ).

Tokyo: 30 Things You Must Put On Your Bucket List

Character Street inside Tokyo Station (where the Narita Express train stops) will send your kids into a frenzy with more than 30 shops selling anime, popular characters, LEGO and more. It is located in the basement under the Yaesu North exit.

Don Quijote discount stores are all over Tokyo, but Mega Don Quijote in Shibuya has more Kit Kat flavors, Japanese sweets, and knick-knacks than I’ve ever seen. And, it’s open 24 hours and is near Shibuya Crossing.

We stumbled upon Mooosh Squishy in Harajuku during our last trip, which is a shop dedicated to squishies and even has a squishy play pit. It’s just a few minutes from the famous Takeshita Dori shopping street (often simply called Takeshita Street), which is where fashionable teenagers and young adults live (be sure to stop at one of the crepe shops for a snack).

You’ll find all things kawaii here and find a few Harajuku girls. We also ate at an outstanding ramen restaurant called Afuri that I would recommend (although ordering through the vending machine was a bit confusing).

There are two family-friendly Disney theme parks at the Tokyo Disney Resort and it’s wise to plan at least two days in Tokyo to see them.

You’ll find almost all of the classic Disney rides at Tokyo Disneyland: Pirates of the Caribbean, Thunder Mountain, Splash Mountain, Peter Pan’s Flight, Snow White’s Adventures, the Haunted Mansion, It’s a Small World, and Space Mountain. There are quite a few rides with the park, including Pooh’s Hunny Hunt (the world’s first free ride), and the food here is some of the best at a Disney park.

You should know that most of the rides at Tokyo Disneyland are narrated in Japanese. This doesn’t take away from the experience, in my opinion, but you may want to let your child know ahead of time.

DisneySea is to Tokyo Disneyland what Disney California Adventure park is to Disneyland. It has more intense rides and more dining options, but also has character encounters and kid-friendly rides.

Places Where Locals Love To Go In Tokyo

For the younger crowd, you can find Finding Nemo and the Little Mermaid rides at Tokyo DisneySea. It’s also surprisingly beautiful for a theme park. Venice “port of call” is especially cute and realistic. If your family trip includes an immersive experience, DisneySea definitely delivers.

The easiest way to buy Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea tickets is through the Tokyo Disney Resort website. You can buy online and print the ticket at home. You will need an ID card (and ID card) to enter the park and scan the park for FASTPass redemption. If for some reason you can’t print a pass, you can still skip the line by purchasing a ticket through Voyagin (Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea) and then pick it up at Maihama Station (Tokyo Disney Resort JR Station).

As you may know, the famous tuna auction has moved to Toyosu Fish Market. I personally think the Tsukiji outdoor market is a must-stop in Tokyo for families because it has more charm and a less commercial feel. It’s also easier to get to from Ginza Hotel.

Here, you can see up close and talk to the vendors about the amazing seafood, sashimi, and traditional Japanese food that you might want to taste. Encourage your child to try new things. If raw fish is not for them, there are cooked options and many places to get ice cream.

Best Things To Do In Japan With Kids

This part of Tsukiji Market is home to a few shops. If you need a knife or good kitchen equipment, it’s a good stop. But, come hungry.

If you can visit both markets, I recommend it. However, if you can choose one and you do not go to one of the tours of Tokyo with entering the auction in the morning of Toyosu, visit Tsukiji.

Therefore, my daughter did not find the visit to Meiji Shrine the most impressive, but it is something you must do at least once in a visit with children to Tokyo.

The Shinto shrine is dedicated to the spirits of Emperor Meijian and his wife, Empress Shōken. Visitors can make offers and write their wishes on the wooden emas. I like to go on Saturdays when I’m about to capture a Japanese wedding.

Best Tours In Tokyo

Yoyogi Park is adjacent to Meiji Temple. Here, you can generally catch a crowd with a selection from busking singers to skateboarders. It has no playground, but has a beautiful garden and pond. Between entertainment and nature, it is a good place to stop for a snack.

Harajuku’s Takeshita Dori pedestrian street full of shops and restaurants is about a 10-minute walk from the park and temple. So, in theory, you can visit the park, Meiji Shrine, and Harajuku in the same day.

This beautiful oasis outside the city center was first opened in 1917 when the emperor gave it to the Japanese people. Today Inokashira Park is the perfect spot for a picnic while you let the kids run off steam.

There are kid-friendly paddle boats you can steer around the long, narrow pond, as well as a relaxing 30-minute swan ride.

Kids will have fun exploring the mini aquarium and petting zoo. Older children will be interested in the legend related to the beautiful red worship of the Japanese Buddhist god Benzaiten in the lake.

It is said that Benzaiten will curse couples who walk too close. Combine a visit here with the Ghibli Museum, on this list, at the end of the park.

Tokyo Skytree is the tallest skyscraper in the world, and has observation decks 1,145 feet and 1,475 feet above ground level.

On a clear day, grab an observation boat ticket for the best view of the city’s skyline. It is one of the only places in Tokyo where you can see Mount Fuji if the weather cooperates.

There is a chance to have a French-Japanese fusion dinner, sip tea, or eat ice cream on the three floors below the Tembo Deck.

The Tembo Gallery (upper level) has fewer facilities but the view is worth climbing the spiral skywalk for.

Tip: You can cut your wait time with a Skytree Fast Track ticket, which I recommend as it’s one of the most popular attractions. It is also often confused with Tokyo Tower, which is a completely separate structure.

You will find a shopping and entertainment center at the base of the tower called Tokyo Solamachi. Here, you will find the Pokemon center.
