The city of San Francisco is struggling with rising cleaning costs and 10.000 public complaints about dirty and unsanitary streets every year. The Public Works Department needs a solution to address citizen grievances and provide a cleaner city experience to the people.
The city was brought onboard to help reduce overflowing waste containers, optimize bin placement and improve collection routes. Sensors were initially installed in 48 of the city’s 3,800 public street bins. Thanks to this solution, San Francisco has improved the cleanliness of city streets and is now empowered to deploy resources more strategically. Health problems related to poor air quality have become one of the largest global costs. Research shows that 80 percent of the world’s population is exposed to pollution levels higher than recommended, with pollution from traffic being the main cause. Today, traffic signals in Copenhagen are set to reduce travel time for citizens, but a new project is guiding the regulation of signals that cause less air pollution. The purpose of the experiment is to generate new knowledge about data-driven traffic management in relation to air quality.
In the future, this could lead to ways to improve air quality in cities through changes in traffic management. During the test period, two similar intersections in Copenhagen will be monitored, collecting information about air quality and traffic counts. The data is combined with external environmental data on traffic speed to generate deeper insights into the connection between traffic regulation and air pollution and to understand the health benefits that can be derived from environmentally conscious traffic management.
In Demark’s capital region, they listen carefully to their water distribution networks. Two of the country’s largest water suppliers, HOFOR and Novafos, are replacing parts of their water distribution networks around Copenhagen with state-of-the-art technology. Here, noise loggers will now hear the sound of leaks. Smart water meters measure end-user consumption. Intelligent valves and pumps enable active pressure management, which reduces the risk of explosions. Collected data is combined with SCADA and GIS in real-time hydraulic modeling and processed in online management information systems to facilitate automatic leakage management and online monitoring of KPIs. This allows leakage teams to target weak pipeline segments with the goal of reducing non-revenue water levels by 4-6 percent.
The project is called LEAKman and has nine Danish partners representing technology providers, consultants, water utilities and the Technical University of Denmark, who joined forces to showcase Danish solutions and pave the way for new technology. The ambition is to make water utilities smarter, more efficient and more sustainable in Denmark as well as around the world.

In the EU, buildings account for 40 percent of total greenhouse gas emissions. Denmark is already reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the utility sector, so energy efficiency in buildings is central to achieving further reductions.
Starting in 2017 and for the next four years, Middlefart Municipality, in close cooperation with Schneider Electric, is using the analytical software Building Analytics in 80 of the municipality’s properties. The software platform analyzes the large volume of data generated by building management systems and generates actionable reports on energy, indoor climate and maintenance in real time.
The action report contains specific instructions on how to resolve the inappropriate operating condition. This enables operating personnel to react quickly and make decisions anchored in fact-based analysis. The renovations are expected to add 5 percent annual energy savings to the 21 percent already saved by the municipality compared to 2008 levels. In this way, Middlefart Municipality achieved an overall saving of at least 26 percent in energy consumption in buildings.

The smart store supermarket will be located next to the Danfoss headquarters in Nordborg and will pave the way for supermarket chains worldwide to build climate-friendly and sustainable warehouses with existing technologies today.

The Smart Store supermarket will have solar panels on the roof and charging stations for electric cars. In addition, the supermarket is equipped with the latest technology in cooling and heating. Excess heat released from refrigerators and freezers is recycled and used to heat the supermarket instead of being wasted. The refrigeration system at the Smart Store supermarket also runs on carbon dioxide – a natural refrigerant – which also helps reduce the overall climate impact.
By using these energy-efficient solutions, Smart Store Supermarket demonstrates how green energy is what we recycle or don’t use. The supermarket will also serve as an Application Development Center (ADC) where Danfoss works with partners to develop new technologies and explore energy storage options.
In 2017, AffaldVarme Aarhus (AVA) – now known as Kredsløb – Denmark’s second largest city’s heating utility, completed the implementation of their new smart metering solution from Kamstrup, which includes 56,000 remotely read heat meters per hour. This is the first step in their efforts to optimize their district heating system, which will supply more buildings and support a carbon-neutral and energy-efficient future.
The increased amount of meter data has provided transparency into the distribution network and enabled a new level of troubleshooting and improvement options. As a result, Kredsløb saw significant benefits and savings in terms of improved operations of their meter park. In addition, the administration involved in collecting and maintaining meter data is reduced and the costs of correcting missing or incorrect readings are virtually eliminated.
