The downside to yesterday’s 5+ hour airport delay was plenty of time to check out my Starbucks purchase and see if the new partnership worked as advertised. Indeed, shortly after purchasing $14.80 before taxes from DCA Starbucks, I checked my account and found that 15 miles (and my 500 SkyMiles bonus) had already been credited to my account.
Free miles and points are my favorite type, especially when they can be earned for doing something you already do regularly. If you spend $5 per visit and go to Starbucks three times a week, you’ll earn 750 Delta SkyMiles. This is not a significant amount, of course. But the miles are free. Plus, there are plenty of opportunities to earn bonus miles or get a discount when you purchase Starbucks gift cards. I typically use the Ink Plus card, which earns 10 points per dollar on office supplies, to get Starbucks gift cards when I need to top up my account.
The purchase I made to earn 15 miles was made with one of these gift cards, so I’m essentially earning an extra mile for every dollar I spend at Starbucks with a few simple clicks. Taking advantage of small perks like this to increase your mileage balance is even more important if you don’t have a regular way to earn a lot of miles (such as large credit card spending or paid business travel). Note: Gary notes that it is possible that Aeroplan could enter into a more lucrative partnership with Starbucks in the future. I don’t know how likely this is. I’m guessing you’ll earn the same amount of one point per dollar spent. I find Aeroplan points to be significantly more valuable than Delta SkyMiles. I’m guessing there will be some way to change your earning preferences, although it may not come to fruition.

For example, I found flights between Seattle and Los Angeles with 6,500 Delta miles. The cash price was ~$111, but the mileage value here is really good at about 2 cents per point. If you typically pay for short flights, you can get some amazing deals with Delta miles.

I did some test searches for domestic business class seats and had a hard time finding cases where Delta miles cost somewhere around 2 cents each. Typical values were closer to 1 cent per mile. However, the reward price is variable. So if you have flexible dates, you may find a good deal. Delta seems to keep a close eye on these awards, and in most cases the inflated prices definitely reflect that.
Below is a 46,000 mile Delta One (Business Class) flight from San Francisco to New York. The same flight costs $539. That gives you a cost of 1.17 cents each. Not terrible, but below average.
Delta is part of the SkyTeam alliance, which gives you access to award flights not only with Delta, but with over 30 airlines around the world. International airlines typically offer fantastic business and first class seats that can cost thousands of dollars. There used to be a lot of great deals on using Delta miles on partner airlines. However, Delta recently increased prices on the vast majority of its partner flights.
One of the few routes Delta hasn’t disrupted is flights between the US and the Middle East. You’ll spend 85,000 Delta miles one-way on a business class flight to cities like Beirut, Cairo, Dubai and Tel Aviv.

For example, you can book Delta One flights to areas like Dubai and Amman for between 85,000 and 105,000 Delta miles each way in business class. These same flights can easily sell for over $3,000, giving you a value of about 2.86 cents per point!
