Electric vehicles are powered by batteries instead of gasoline or diesel. Some experts say they can be recycled to make them useful for other purposes. There is no suitable infrastructure for disposal and recycling of these batteries or electronic waste.
Many researchers and experts have claimed that most of the electricity is produced by burning fuels and in this way the emissions created by electric vehicles are similar to a car that runs on diesel. Places where coal produces the electric power where electric vehicles do not help the environment because their carbon footprint becomes the same as a gasoline powered vehicle. Electric cars often need to be charged all night and thus the amount of emissions to produce electricity increases. Khosla claims that “there was an active push towards the adoption of renewable energy to fuel the needs of the electric vehicle sector”.

The new study from the universities of Exeter, Nijmegen – in the Netherlands – and Cambridge shows that in 95% of the world, driving an electric car is better for the climate than a petrol car.
The researchers say average “lifetime” emissions from electric cars are up to 70% lower than petrol cars in countries such as Sweden and France (where most electricity comes from renewables and nuclear), and around 30% lower in the UK.
They say the picture for electric cars will get steadily better as countries transition to clean electricity.
The study predicts that in 2050 every second car on the world’s streets could be electric. This would reduce global CO2 emissions by 1.5 gigatonnes per year, equal to Russia’s current total CO2 emissions.

Progress could be much faster if countries adopted stricter targets, as Britain has done by pledging that every new car sold be zero-emissions by 2035 at the latest.
Lead author of the study, Dr. Florian Knobloch from the University of Nijmegen said: “The idea that electric vehicles can increase emissions is a complete myth.
“We presented the numbers for the whole world, looking at a whole range of cars and even in our worst case scenario, there would be a reduction in emissions in almost all cases..”
But this does not mean that the problem of cars and the environment has been solved. First, it will be difficult to transition the car fleet to electric in time to meet the UK’s 2050 climate target.

Prof. Greg Marsden, from the Transport Research Institute at the University of Leeds, warned: “Electrification is necessary but not sufficient.
“A reduction in travel demand of at least 20%, along with a significant shift away from the car, is required to meet our climate targets.
“It implies a really big social change. That’s why it’s a climate emergency and not a climate discomfort.”
The new study also looked at electric domestic heat pumps and found that they too produce lower emissions than fossil fuel alternatives in 95% of the world.
Study Dispels Myth That Electric Cars Pollute As Much As Gas Powered Cars Due To ‘dirty’ Grid
The researchers performed a life cycle assessment in which they calculated not only the greenhouse gas emissions created when using cars and heating systems, but also in the production chain and waste processing.
In 53 out of 59 global regions – including all of Europe, the US and China – the findings show that electric cars and heat pumps are already less emitting than fossil fuel alternatives. Are electric vehicles better for the environment? The answer is yes – not perfect, but good More than the average new gasoline-powered vehicle, no matter where you live in the U.S., according to a greenhouse gas emissions calculator created by the EPA. The calculator lets you compare the total emissions per mile—almost all carbon dioxide—of current EVs in any region of the country to the emissions of an average gasoline vehicle.
But wait, aren’t “zero emission” electric vehicles? Well, not exactly. They have zero local emissions. The calculator explains the reality that while electricity doesn’t emit carbon dioxide on the road (ie, no tailpipe emissions), the energy stored in their batteries has to be generated somewhere—and much of US electricity generation creates what are known as upstream emissions for the EV.
However, the EPA calculator also shows that the oft-heard criticism that electric cars simply move the same emissions elsewhere is a myth. Electric vehicles are still responsible for lower greenhouse gas emissions than the average new gasoline vehicle.
Electric Vehicles Don’t Love Environment As Much
For EVs, the EPA calculates the grams of greenhouse gases produced to generate the electricity needed to drive a mile. The calculator provides model-specific grams per mile for each of the various electric cars on the market today, as well as current hybrid electric vehicles.
The calculation is also location specific. This is important for accurate calculation of upstream EV emissions because the mix of electricity generation sources varies by region. In the U.S., a large portion of our electricity—about 60% in 2020—comes from power plants that run on fossil fuels, including nearly 20% from plants that still burn coal, according to the Energy Information Administration. Another 20% comes from nuclear plants, and about 20% Others originate from renewable energy such as wind, solar and hydroelectric production.
