International Journal Of Computer Aided Engineering And Technology – Melanoma is considered one of the most malignant, metastatic and dangerous forms of skin cancer that can lead to death. The cure and survival of this type of skin cancer directly depends on the diagnosis and removal of melanoma at an early stage. The accuracy of the clinical diagnosis of melanoma with the aid of an eye is only 60%, depending only on the accumulated knowledge and experience of each doctor. The second suggestion is the need for computer-aided diagnosis (CAD) systems as a non-invasive aid to clinicians to increase the accuracy of detection, as well as to provide information on optical features important for their identification. The ultimate goal of this study is to design an automated, low-cost computer-aided diagnosis system for melanoma skin cancer to increase system flexibility and availability. It also investigates the extent to which using clinical photographic images instead of dermoscopy can influence the diagnosis of melanoma, using both in the same automated diagnostic system. Texture features are extracted from 140 types of pigmented skin lesions (PSL) based on gray-level concatenation matrix (GLCM), and the effective features are selected by the Fisher score ranking, and then classified using artificial neural network (ANN), and the whole system is processed. interactive graphical user interface (GUI) for ease of use. The results show the high performance of the proposed CAD system for differentiating melanoma from melanocytic skin tumors using texture analysis on clinical photographs with 100% predictive accuracy in the training phase and 91% in the testing phase. Moreover, the use of this type of image shows a higher accuracy in the diagnosis of melanoma compared to dermoscopy images, because clinical images of photographs are obtained using low-cost consumers that show a certain degree of resolution at the edges of our field of view.
Mai Saeed Mabrouk received his BSc in 2000 from the Department of Systems and Biomedical Engineering, Cairo University, Giza, Egypt. He received his MS and PhD degrees in biomedical engineering from the school in 2004 and 2008, respectively. Since August 2008, he has been working as a lecturer at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the Misr University of Science and Technology (MSUT). He has authored several research articles in image processing and bioinformatics. His research interests include genomic signal processing as well as biomedical image processing, bioinformatics, and digital signal processing.
