What are the effects of excessive media use? Research in this field is still in its infancy, but the emerging field of video games and the brain shows that we are in for some surprises.
Adults Keep Complaining About Video Game Play Dumbing Down Our Generation. Are There Any Benefits Of Playing Video Games?
You often hear that too much time spent on the computer is bad for your vision, but in a surprising twist, some of the most criticized games – first-person, video games with events where the player often wants to face bad guys, zombies, or monsters – have been found to increase the quality of your vision.
These studies use tools from vision science in which participants have to make an implicit decision whether a Gabor patch (black and white lines) is present or absent . By adjusting the amount of contrast in the Gabor patch (Figure 1), its average time (Figure 2) or the time it stays on the screen, it has been shown that playing video games improves many aspects of vision.

Not so fast! First, all excess activity is bad for you. Just like drinking too much water can harm your health, or exercising too much can harm your muscles, playing too many video games can harm your brain. A healthy diet should include exercise, mental stimulation, and social activities – so if you turn into a recluse who plays alone for hours, this is not healthy and your parents are right against you!
A thorny issue has to do with playing too many games. Published scientific studies are certainly not a reason to play the game. Most studies today suggest that about 30–40 min of game play per day may be a reasonable schedule.
