Things To Know When Buying A Diamond
Gemologists measure the weight of a diamond in carats. Each carat is equal to 200 milligrams or 0.2 grams. Each carat can be divided into 100 “points,” with each point equal to one hundredth of a carat. This allows for very accurate measurements down to the hundredth decimal place. Most diamonds you see when shopping will have their weight listed in carats or a fraction of a carat. However, you may also find a particularly small diamond whose weight is measured in points. Be careful not to confuse diamond carat with diamond size.
Things To Know When Buying An Emerald Diamond
Only a few diamonds are truly colorless. The rest is available in various shades of yellow and brown. After a diamond is mined, it is sent to a gemstone lab, where gemologists grade its color on a scale that begins with D (colorless) and ends with Z (light yellow). Colorless diamonds are the most valuable and therefore the most expensive. We usually recommend choosing diamonds between D and I maximum. Learn more about the different diamond colors and their quality.
Because diamonds are formed far below the earth’s surface, they have internal inclusions and external blemishes. Clarity refers to the number, nature and location of these imperfections. The clarity of diamonds is rated on a scale that starts with Loupe Clean (LC) and goes up to Piqué 3 (P3). Check out our guide to choosing the right diamond clarity.
*Lupe Clean (LC) is also referred to as Flawless/Internal Flawless at GIA, and P1, P2, P3 (Piqué) is also referred to as I1, I2, I3 (included) at GIA.
The cut of a diamond refers to all the tiny facets and angles that are cut into the gemstone to enhance its reflection of light. A poorly cut diamond is dull and lifeless, while a diamond with quality facets and angles interacts efficiently with light to produce: Brightness – the reflection of white light, Fire – the scattering of light in all the colors of the rainbow and sparkle or Sparkle – caused by light and dark patterns within the gemstone. The degree of cutting is divided into three parameters: proportions, symmetry, cut. Each parameter is evaluated separately according to different quality levels: Excellent (EX), Very Good (VG), Good (G) or Fair (F). Learn why a diamond’s cut is so important when choosing a diamond.

Diamonds come in different shapes. The round brilliant cut is the most common and valuable diamond shape. Round diamonds are highly prized for their supreme brilliance.
The remaining diamond shapes are called fancy shapes. Some of them, such as the marquise, pear and heart cuts, are actually modifications of the round brilliant cut, while the square or rectangular shapes, including the Asscher cut, are step cuts. All fancy shaped diamonds exhibit varying degrees of fire and sparkle. Discover our guide to the 7 most popular diamond shapes.
A small portion, approximately 25-30%, of diamonds emit a faint blue glow when exposed to the UV rays of sunlight. Although a diamond’s fluorescence is difficult to see with the naked eye, sometimes too much fluorescence can make the diamond appear blurry.
If you want to know how much fluorescence a particular diamond has, check out its lab report. Gem laboratories grade diamonds with fluorescence as zero, light, medium or strong (according to the HRD gem laboratory in Antwerp). We usually advise avoiding fluorescence altogether.

The safest way to purchase a diamond is to purchase it with a certificate issued by a reputable gemstone laboratory. The main gemstone laboratories are the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), the Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD) and the International Gemological Institute (IGI).
Certificates guarantee the quality of a diamond by specifically listing the cut, color, clarity and weight. They also protect the buyer’s investment by helping the gemstone better retain its value over time. We recommend always buying a diamond with a certificate.
