Things To Know When Buying A Puppy
That morning I didn’t know it, but in the afternoon I was going to bring a cute Aussie mix puppy named Linus.

In fact, we almost named him Maximus Decimus Meridius (I should have watched Gladiator the night before). Today, I can’t imagine him being any different than Linus.
Did I mention I didn’t know I was bringing a dog home that day? I read puppy books, searched websites, and talked to friends and family about dogs and puppies.
Heck, I adopted my roommate’s dog in college, but I was still in the research phase when I found Linus.
I had ZERO puppy accessories. I wasn’t prepared, but he was perfect so we said “I do” and the shelter told us he needed a microchip/vaccines and to come back in an hour and we could take him home.

I filled out and signed Linus’ adoption papers and then rushed to the local pet store. I had an hour to figure out what I needed for Linus for the next day/week/month/year.
“Our” new Puppy list should apply to all puppies, but remember that most breed Golden Retrievers, Labrador Retrievers, and of course, Linus is an Australian Shepherd mix puppy, other breeds may have different special needs that not reflected. on this list.

QUICK UPDATE: We only offer one product (we like) per category. It was hard to choose the best/favorite so please do your own due diligence and find what works best for your puppy
We recommend getting a variety of colorful toys to help when your dog starts teething/chewing. However, we think it’s especially important to pick up a toy that looks like it’s a fake from a mate and mama so you can carry the scent of your pup’s family with you. Check out the Calmeroos Puppy that also includes warmth and a moving heart to help your puppy sleep at night.
We train all of our dogs and if you are bringing your dog home alone it is important to have something to keep your dog safe. We loved and still use the Midwest Life Stage Crate that we bought for Linus over 14 years ago.
If you have never had a puppy, be prepared for unnecessary chewing on furniture, clothes, shoes, hands and feet. A good dog chew will help reverse this unwanted behavior until your puppy grows up and his teeth fall out. Our favorite treats for our puppies and senior dogs are Bully Sticks

Puppies love to bite and chew anything. Bitter Apple Spray will help prevent pup behavior.
We’re not big on puppy collars. A simple collar does the trick. After all, it will outgrow the collar in no time. We love this Blueberry Reflective Buckle Collar.
We prefer to purchase the tags at your local pet store, but you can also order Pet Tags online.
You can order tags online ahead of time or your local pet store can make tags for you the same day. The two most important things we include are the puppy’s name and phone number. Make sure your puppy is microchipped in case he loses his collar. Our shelter fixed Linus up before sending him home with us.

We also bring fake blankets to the puppy’s siblings and then put the vacuum in the crate to make our puppy feel more comfortable on his first night in his new home. We like smaller blankets that we can use as target mats when our dogs start training.
We feed our puppies premium dog food. Our puppy food of choice is Wellness Puppy Formula. We soak ours in warm water for about 10 minutes when we bring our 8 week old puppy.
We recently started giving Raven new dog food and she loves it! We recommend The Farmer’s Dog if you are interested in feeding your puppy a new diet. Get 50% off your first order.
A simple stainless steel plate and bowl of water will do the trick. We got a similar metal dog bowl when we first brought Linus. We like that they have a silicone bottom so they don’t slide around on the floor.

QUICK TIP: Make sure you get the right size for your puppy. We get the large 8.5 inch bowl for Labs and Goldens.
Do you know? Your puppy will have an accident at home. Even if you stick to a strict potty training program, there will always be gaps. Never fear Rocco & Roxie makes great stain and odor removers that we use on our dogs.
QUICK TIP: Always use an enzymatic cleaner that completely removes urine odor. Your dog’s breath is thousands to millions of times better than yours so make sure you clean up with someone who does the job well like Rocco & Roxie.
When do you start training your puppy? The day you get it! Whether you decide to treat your dog or not, it’s still important to have food for your puppy.
Tips For First Time Dog Owners
Depending on the breed, you may need a special brush and comb to maintain a well-groomed coat. Otherwise, your dog’s fur can become matted in no time (not a problem with Labs). We have 5 brushes/combs we use for Goldens and Labs:
You don’t want to use harsh human products or even dog shampoo as it can be too much for your dog’s skin. Linus came from the shelter and needed a shower when he got home. Stetson came from Guide Dog school and had a bath before I picked him up. But he had an accident while driving home and needed another shower when we got home.
When we brought Elsa home, her breeder gave us a basket full of puppy products. One very important product that we didn’t have on our new puppy list was pumpkin.
If your dog doesn’t have an upset stomach or colic, he probably doesn’t need pumpkin as a supplement.
Things To Consider Before Buying A Groenendael Puppy
On the other hand, if your puppy has mushy poop, pumpkin filling can be a godsend because it helps make poopies stronger.
We have bred dozens of puppies and they usually don’t have a place to sit for the first few days.
Since raising dogs for almost 20 years, we have tried several pumpkin options. You can purchase special packages (services) from your local pet store.
We also bought Libby’s 100% pure pumpkin from the grocery store. If you buy from your grocery store, make sure there are no additives in the pumpkin.

Finally, we recently started giving our dogs Native Pet Organic Pumpkin. Why? It is a clean powder that makes it easy to store and store after use.
If your puppy has loose stools, you’ll want to take him to the vet to make sure he’s not sick.
Our second guide dog Derby had several accidents on the drive home and made a small mess on the couch and floor. Since then we always have rags to keep the car and all areas of the house clean of pies, poop, and vomit.
These items are not very necessary or you may have options that you can use temporarily in your home. In general, you may want to take most of these items with you during the first week with your puppy, but you may not need them the day you bring your puppy.
Ethical Dog Buyers Guide
We don’t always have a bed for our bodies and find that blankets, towels and sheets can be a good option. We even had a friend make a mattress for us out of egg foam. A word of warning: not all, but many of our dogs have decided that the pet bed will make a good chew and scatter toy.
Blankets, towels, sheets and even pillows can be used as dog beds. Many puppies love dog beds by the ears. In fact, Stetson took our seats. 🙂One thing we are looking for in our next dog bed is that it is easy to wash. As you can imagine, puppies often have accidents on their dog beds.
We potty train all of our puppies outside. However, I know that potty training abroad is not always an option. So, when do we use pads? We use them when Raven has puppies.
We don’t use them much now but we have a big yard and a pooper scooper. However,
