Reading your electric bill might not seem complicated, but if you’re like most Americans, you might be making a few mistakes. The complexity of your account will vary based on your location and utility, but there are a few common components that everyone should understand. If you’re looking for help with bills, here are the top five things you need to know to read and understand your electricity bill correctly, with examples from my electricity bill.
Depending on where you live in the country, your electricity bill may be bundled with other council bills – so it’s important to know what you’re looking at! Electricity consumption is measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), while water consumption is measured in gallons and gas consumption is measured in British Thermal Units (BTU). These units of measurement should serve as an easy indicator of where your electricity bill ends and your water or gas bill begins.
What Is Cost Benefit Analysis, How Is It Used, What Are Its Pros And Cons?
I live in Massachusetts and receive two separate bills each month from my Eversource utility: one for electricity and one for gas. Each account is clearly labeled on the front page so I can tell them apart.
On the other hand, my friend in California gets one combined electric and gas bill from her utility company, PG&E.
This step is crucial: are you on a budget recovery plan? Or, are you charged for your monthly usage? If you’re on a monthly budget billing plan, your utility takes the number of kWh you used last year, assumes you’ll use about the same this year, and creates a monthly average bill. This allows your utility to spread the total cost you pay for electricity over the year. As a result, if you live in a hot part of the country and use electricity to run your air conditioner, in the summer months, you’ll see a lower bill than your neighbors who are on a monthly billing cycle. But on the other hand, in the winter months you should expect a higher bill from your neighbors.
If you’re billed monthly for your usage, it’s a little simpler. Each cycle you will be billed for the number of kWh your household used that month at the prevailing rate. It is billed for my monthly usage, so my electric bill varies monthly based on my usage ($81.18 I owed for electricity in February 2022).

The supply charge includes the cost of generating electricity, while the transmission and distribution charge covers the cost of delivering electricity.
