Here are five recommended steps for developing your own writing process and writing style: brainstorming, writing, revising, editing, and publishing.
1. Brainstorm. This stage can also be called “pre-writing”. At this stage, you formulate ideas, plan ways to support those ideas, and think about the best ways to structure and organize your paper.

A concept called “free writing” can be a useful tool for brainstorming. During free writing, write down all the ideas that come to your mind – no editing! Hold yourself accountable by talking about your writing goals with others, such as colleagues, peers, and Graduate Writing Center instructors.
Sometimes you don’t fully know what you’re writing about until you’re actively writing. Remember that writing is an iterative process. Use free writing brainstorming tools when you get stuck, and use outlines to stay organized.

3. Check. Completing a writing project usually involves many types of revisions. One of the most important things to remember when revising is to consider the reader’s experience. Peer editing is highly recommended. Ask other students, friends, or family to read your manuscript. This is a great way to ensure that your paper is understandable to an external audience. Check if all points are explained well. Identify areas of your paper that may need additional support. What does the reader need to know to understand your point or argument?
Does your paper move well? Think about where you might need to restructure your paper and where the ideas might fit better. What is the best way for your reader to understand the information?
Are you giving too much detail or too much information? Do you repeat? Remove extra words or phrases. Your reader will thank you for giving them clear, concise ideas and explanations.

You can also think of this “R” as “rewrite”. After reading your paper, you may find that some areas may not support your argument and need to be rewritten. Don’t be afraid to make big changes! As a writer, you are in charge, and you can experiment and play with different ways of expressing your thoughts in words.
4. Edit. Now is the time to refine your writing and check the paper for clarity and mechanical errors. Make sure all your citations are properly incorporated and formatted in the correct style. Read your paper out loud to help slow down and catch small grammar and spelling mistakes that editing software may not notice. You may want to read and re-read several times to make sure your writing is absolutely perfect and represents your best work.
5. Publish. You’ve fine-tuned and edited your writing, and now it’s time to publish it. Publishing can be sending an assignment to a professor or a professional journal. Publishing is a way to get recognition for your hard work. Post with pride knowing you’ve successfully navigated the writing process!

Start by using “how could we” questions to generate a list of ideas. You can also add details if you want.
You can either brainstorm together or write down ideas based on problem solving first and meet later to compare and combine ideas – research shows that the latter leads to more and better ideas.
But a list of 50+ unsorted ideas is not a good starting point for a thorough evaluation. So you should identify the ones with the most potential and shortlist about 10 ideas to explore further.

At this stage, there are two potential pitfalls that every project team must avoid. Some companies stick to “realistic” ideas and often aim for too shallow a process.
Others – especially when you have a budding Steve Jobs on your team – aim too high, focusing only on the long shot.
