By definition, photosynthesis is a process in which photoautotrophs convert energy obtained from the Sun into usable chemical energy. Light, water, chlorophyll, and carbon dioxide are the main requirements for this process.
Atmospheric carbon dioxide enters plant leaves through stomata, i.e., minute epidermal pores in leaves and stems of plants that facilitate the transfer of various gases and water vapor.
Water enters the leaves, mainly through the roots. These roots are specially designed to take water from the soil and transfer it to the leaves through the stem.
As sunlight falls on the surface of the leaf, the chlorophyll, that is, the green pigment present in the plant leaf, traps its energy. Interestingly, the green color of the leaf is also attributed to the presence of chlorophyll.
How Is A Leaf Adapted For Photosynthesis?
Hydrogen and oxygen are then produced by converting water using energy from the Sun. Hydrogen combines with carbon dioxide to make food for the plant, while oxygen is released through the stomata. Similarly, even algae and bacteria use carbon dioxide and hydrogen to prepare food, while oxygen is released as waste.
Electrons from chlorophyll molecules and protons from water molecules speed up chemical reactions in the cell. These reactions produce ATP (adenosine triphosphate), which provides energy for cell reactions, and NADP (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide diphosphate), necessary for plant metabolism.
While we take in oxygen and give off carbon dioxide to make energy, plants take in carbon dioxide and give out oxygen to make energy.
Photosynthesis has many benefits, not only for photoautotrophs, but also for humans and animals. The chemical energy stored in plants is transferred to animals and humans when they eat the plant. It also helps to maintain a normal level of oxygen and carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Almost all the oxygen in the atmosphere can be attributed to this process, which also means that respiration and photosynthesis go hand in hand.
