What Do I Need To Know Before Starting An Llc – Calligraphy tips for beginners. These are the 5 things I wish I knew before I started learning calligraphy…
As I celebrated my second wedding anniversary, I realized that my third year of calligraphy is almost here too! My love for calligraphy began with my desire to address my wedding invitations.

While it has been a rewarding journey, it has also brought some challenges along the way. Every now and then I wish I could go back and give my newbie self some calligraphy tips.

That’s why in this blog post, I’m sharing with you five things you should know before you start calligraphy…
UPDATE: Since I wrote this post, I also wrote this one where I share everything you need to know to start learning calligraphy the right way from the beginning.
While this may seem pretty obvious, it wasn’t how I started. I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one who missed the basics. I wanted to do calligraphy with a pointed pen because I saw a beautiful wedding envelope on Pinterest.
So the first thing I thought was, I can do it! I went to Michaels and bought a kit that said “calligraphy kit”. I would do calligraphy and it would look just like those envelopes on Pinterest! (or so I thought).

I didn’t know how to get the nib (the metal thing you put on top of the pen had a name, WHO KNOWS!) in the pen. After finally figuring out how to do it, my new challenge was getting the ink to flow properly.
Phew! One word about it: Disaster!!! I gave up shortly after starting it. It’s not that the calligraphy kit wasn’t good, I just didn’t know how to use it properly.
I decided to go with a brush pen instead. I thought using a calligraphy brush pen would be as easy as it looked from all the Instagram videos.
They didn’t seem that complicated. But on the other hand, I was completely wrong! So I tried calligraphy again, this time with a brush pen. My first attempt at writing with a brush was nothing like the videos I saw on Instagram. I couldn’t get the brush to make thin and thick lines. It was another disaster. I also gave up using brush pens.
What To Do Before Starting Any Business?
Please save yourself some frustration and don’t skip ahead. My #1 calligraphy tip for beginners: start at the beginning! So how exactly do I do this?
Start simple. Most likely, you already have the necessary tools to start doing calligraphy: pencil (or pen) and paper. Yes, that’s all you need to get started. Check out this blog post if you want to learn how.
Learn artificial calligraphy. In this blog post I tell you what faux calligraphy is and how you can learn how to do it. And in this one, I give you some (very) important reasons why you should learn artificial calligraphy first.

Learn letter shapes. What does a letter consist of? Down strokes (when your pen goes down) and up strokes (when your pen goes up).
Get the right tools. You don’t need ALL the tools. You just need the right ones to get started. In this blog post, I tell you exactly what you need to start learning calligraphy with a pointed pen. If you want to get started with brush pen calligraphy, then this blog post will guide you to the right supplies you need to get started.
Practice calligraphy exercises. Calligraphy exercises are A LOT! These basic exercises will give you the foundation you need to do calligraphy.
Learning calligraphy means acquiring a new skill. Like any other skill, you need to learn the basics, practice and the foundation that builds the bigger picture.
Starfield Tips To Know Before Starting
If you want a step-by-step process to learn calligraphy the right way, I wrote an entire workbook about it. You can get it here.
I love sports, so I like to explain things related to sports to make them easier to understand. It’s like wanting to be Michael Jordan without even knowing how to dribble a basketball. You’re not going to say, oh, let me buy a ball and start playing like Michael! right Then don’t do the same with calligraphy.
Here’s a simpler example: remember when you were learning to write? You didn’t just grab a pen and start writing words. First you learned how to hold the pen. Then you did a TON of practice to get your hand used to the letter shapes. And then you started making letters, words and even sentences. Learning calligraphy is the same.
As I mentioned before, you don’t need ALL the tools. You need the right ones to get started. You already know that to start learning calligraphy, all you need is a pen and paper. Once you’ve learned the basics, it’s essential to get the right calligraphy tools and lettering supplies.

All pen holders, brush pens, nibs and inks are not created equal. Each serves a purpose. You’ll save yourself a lot of frustration, time and money by getting the right tools.
I won’t lie, having ALL the calligraphy supplies is extremely satisfying, you don’t need all of them, just the right ones, especially to start learning calligraphy. Once you learn to use and master the ones you already have, by all means get more.
The truth is, getting new supplies can be HIGHLY addictive. For me at least, there’s something so satisfying about opening a new pack of new captions. Aah!
Everything You Need To Know Before You Start A Telehealth Business
This might be the best calligraphy tip for any beginner. I wish there was a more natural way to get better at calligraphy, but there isn’t. There is no one magical tool that will make you a better calligrapher. The magic is in practice!
Getting ALL the brush pens, latest gadgets and supplies won’t matter or make you better if you don’t practice. For the longest time, I bought every pen I saw on display on Instagram, thinking it was THE ONE that would finally take my calligraphy to the next level, but it never happened.
Be sure to check out my resource library. I have SO many FREE calligraphy practice sheets to help you out and I’m always adding more!
This statement even applies to life in general. Although it’s easier said than done, I’ve learned to appreciate other people’s journeys. For me, seeing calligraphy videos on Instagram was the main reason I thought I could do calligraphy. It was also the same reason why I stopped doing it for a while.
What I Wish Someone Told Me Before Taking Online Classes
I went down a comparison rabbit hole and it took away all the joy that calligraphy had brought me. Watching calligraphy videos no longer inspired me. It revived all my insecurities, over and over again.
It can be so overwhelming to see accounts posting fantastic work every day when you barely manage to do ONE decent thing for an entire week. Sometimes even a month!
It took me a while to realize that the 20 second calligraphy video I saw on Instagram probably took more than 20 tries and many hours of practice before it got to that point. After all the years of practicing and making videos, I can definitely tell you that it almost never happens on the first try. It takes a lot of practice to make ONE good video.
Please don’t compare yourself to others. It’s okay if your calligraphy doesn’t look like the rest of the work you see online. First, you shouldn’t. Your work should look different and it should be unique. Second, their current chapter in this calligraphy journey may be different than yours. Their life situation may not be the same either.
Cooking Skills You Need To Know Before Starting Culinary School
JUST DO IT! Do what makes you happy. The only thing you have to worry about is your trip. If you want to become a better calligrapher, practice.
You don’t have to post just the finished product, post about your process. Always strive to do your best, but even when you think it’s not your best work, share it anyway. You never know when you inspire someone. I have to keep reminding myself of that!
Last but not least, this calligraphy tip for beginners is one we all need, no matter how long we’ve been doing this art!
There will be blocks on your way to learning calligraphy, that’s for SURE! Learning something new can be frustrating. It usually is! When you don’t learn something right away, it’s easier to stop and walk away than to keep trying. But remember why you started! Remember why you decided to learn and continue learning calligraphy or lettering.
