First, you must have a copy of the Basic Theory Test (BTT) book and one of the Highway Code. Before registering for the test, we recommend that you first take the time to read and familiarize yourself with the rules of the road. Once you think you are ready for the next step, sign up for BTT. The test costs $6.50 and you can choose from three test centers across Singapore:

Please note that before registering for your BTT test, you will need to create an account with the driving school of your choice. This will incur some registration fees.
Once you’ve passed your BTT, it’s time to apply for a Provisional Driving License (PDL). To do this, one has to log in through Singpass, pay $25 for the license (either in cash or through NETS) and apply online through the e-service of the traffic police.
This is when the real driving happens! You have to choose between learning to drive at a driving school and from a private driving instructor.
If you choose the former, remember that there is a fixed syllabus you must follow and a minimum number of subjects to complete before you are allowed to take the two final exams. Driving schools typically charge $69.12 to $81 for each 100-minute lesson.

On the other hand, a private instructor is more flexible with the curriculum, training duration and timings. Before choosing your instructor, we recommend that you ask around, do as much research as you can, and read online reviews. Here you can search for private driving instructors. Private instructors charge $40 to $50 an hour.
Wait! Before you take the practical test, you have to clear another theory test called FTT. The steps and costs for taking FDT are similar to PDT. Book your test date at one of the three driving centers. Once you pass the test, you will need two years to complete your Practical Driving Test (PDT).
You’re almost there. But before your driving test, you have to go through 3 compulsory modules of simulator course. You can qualify for this once you complete 5 practical courses.
By now, you should be well versed in your theory, practice and brief summaries of highways. Your driving school or private instructor will let you know when you’re ready and book a PDT for you. The test fee is $33.

Your PDT consists of two parts and will be conducted by an examiner appointed by the traffic police. The first part will take place on the driving circuit, whereas the second part will test your road etiquette and how well you follow the rules on public roads. We won’t lie – if you make a big mistake, you’ll fail immediately, while small mistakes will result in penalty points, so be alert and attentive on the road.
We hope you get past this final hurdle on the first try, but if you don’t, don’t worry. You can book two compulsory revision subjects and apply for retest. If you pass, good! You can apply for a driving license at a driving centre. It will cost you $50.
